Line Tool (shift+F3): Used to draw straight lines at any angle.  Hold Shift key to constraint to specific angle while drawing.  Line that already drawn can be selected, moved, or resized with Pointer tool.

Double click line tool to set default Line width and style.  This will apply to the line to be drawn next.

Straight Line Tool (alt+Shift+F3):  Used to draw straight lines with constraint angles.  This tool works similar to Line tool while holding shift.

Rectangle Tool (shift+F4): Used to draw rectangles or squares. Hold shift to draw squares. Since rectangle is a closed shape it can have both Fill and Outline Colors.  Its outline properties will be same that were set for Line tool.

Rectangle with Fill/Paper/Pattern can be selected by clicking on fill/outline.  It can be moved by placing pointer on fill/outline and dragging.

Rectangle with No Fill can be selected or moved by clicking and dragging its outline or border only.

Ellipse Tool (shift+F5): Used to draw Ovals or Circles. Hold shift to draw circles.

Polygon Tool (shift+F6): A shape having more than 3 sides is known as Polygon.  In PageMaker Polygon tool can be used to draw polygons, stars and custom shapes.

Changing Polygon Settings: (Element menuàPolygon Settings)

Polygon tool can also be used to draw stars.  For that, we have to change polygon settings under Element menu.

There are two options under polygon settings dialog:

  1. Number of sides: used to specify the number of sides for the polygon.  Default value is 6.  Minimum value is 3 and maximum value is 100.
  2. Star inset: This option can be used to make or convert polygon as star instead of polygon.  Minimum value is 0%, maximum value is 100% and default value is 0%.  Increasing star inset percentage, increases the depth of star.

When we draw star with polygon, the number of sides option is used to set number of corners for the star.

Two methods of using Polygon:

Method1:

Drag diagonally or across the page.  In this case, we can get either polygon or star based on the polygon settings.

Method2: Click and move continuously to create points and line segments until required shape is formed.  Connect the first and last points.  Using this method, we can create custom shapes.  To complete custom shape early, double click on a point.

Note that even though, custom shape is stopped without connecting first and last points it can not be treated as open shape.

Editing Custom Shape:

  1. Double click with pointer tool on custom shape
  2. You can see anchor pointer along with corner handles on the shape
  3. Click in between two corner handles to create new anchor point
  4. Click on anchor point to remove it
  5. Drag anchor point to create new sides
