Windows Explorer allows us to view and manage all levels of folders(i.e. drives, folders, sub folders) in your system

 

Open Windows Explorer:

Start–>Searchbar–>Type “File Explorer” or “Windows Explorer”

(or)

Win+E

 

 

Components of Explorer Window:

  1. Back and Forward Buttons
  2. Recent Pages
  3. Address bar
  4. Refresh Button
  5. Search bar
  6. Navigation Pane
  7. Details Pane

 

Exploring Folder Hierarchy:

  1. Right click on a folder/driveàExplore
  2. Right side showing triangle beside a folder in navigation pane indicates subfolders. Click on the triangle to explore or condense.
  3. Click on the parent folder button in the address bar to change to required folder.
  4. Back/forward buttons are used to see previous viewed content. Arrow beside back/forward button has the history of viewed things in the window.

 

Folder content in different views:

  1. Right click on empty area of folder windowàview
  2. Select any one of the following options:
    1. Thumbnails: Displays contents of files or folders as tiny pictures
    2. Icons: Displays files or folders as rows of icons
    3. List: Displays files or folders as a list.
    4. Details: Displays files or folders along with their details.

 

Arranging Files and Folders:

  1. Right click on empty area of folder windowàArrange icons by
  2. Select Group By to group icons based on their types
  3. Use the following options to arrange or group icons:
    1. Name: file name in alphabetical order
    2. Size: file size smaller to larger
    3. Type: applications, text files, folders etc.
    4. Modified : recent to earlier
  4. Select Auto Arrange to automatically arrange the icons.

 

Refresh command is useful to redraw/reload again the viewing area of a window so that any new changes in the folder items are shown.

 

Open in a new Window: This is useful to open a selected folder in another explorer window

Check Properties of a file/folder: Right click on a file/folderàproperties
